I don't mean to rude, crude or anything like that by asking - I am just curious! It was one of those things that came up in a conversation with a friend and she didn't know either.

"Cherry" refers to the unbroken hymen, which is considered as "vulgar slang". Fruit or vegetable euphemisms are common when referring to the male/female bits and pieces, e.g. banana (penis) or melons (breasts). It's more "acceptable".

When penetration takes place, it's thought that it "pops" open as it breaks.

Hence the phrase: "Pop one's cherry".

I was eating some cherries the other day and they are very hard to eat without getting the red juice all over your hands. So, i am thinking that to pop a cherry gets you some red juice and maybe into a mess. They are very sweet Anyhow, I am thinking that may have had some relation to how that expression got started.

I was reading a book yesterday on Beauty and the author is into this kind of thing. She might have an answer: http://www.nancyfriday.com

When women lose there virginity, men often break their hymen. This often creates some vagina bleeding. Hence the red of the cherry, and popping of the hymen.

I feel like I need a shower...

Could it have anything to do with the colour of cherry juice? Plus a bit of imagination?

Well, pop a cherry.
What happens?
It breaks and the red stuff comes out.

When coitus is undergone for the first time, the hymen is broken; stretched, and causes bleeding.

The vaginal opening is usually only as big as a cherry. (Not all the time.)

Thus, 'popping the cherry' was born.

Sometimes, when a virgin has sex for the first time, if her hymen is still in tact and is broken by that act of intercourse, she can bleed. Blood is red, hence "pop the cherry."
