because after you read some, or deleted some - you used your browser's back button to go back to a previous condition where you did have "x" new messages. If you reload the page, you will see an accurate "x" figure because it will update. if you use the back button from your browser "x" doesn't update.

The Mail Icon shows the total number of messages which
include the Message received in Inbox and also Message
in the Bulk Folder. If you count the unread messages in the
Inbox and Bulk Folder the same will tally with the total messages
shown in the Mail Icon. It may please be noted that the Mail
Icon indicate only the unread messages and not the messages
read by you.

X (lets say 5) 5 is the new mail you've recieved after the last time you signed out and Till the moment you signed in (today) and Inbox shows lets say 170... those are the mails recieved earlier days and you've already logged in and not read that mails... those Mails are also included here!

i agree with umax answer. actually ur inbox shows the total number of mails (new & unread) and ur mailicon only the unread mails from the time you last logged out.
