Not as quickly if they're plastic coated.

But if you trade it in for a house, the upkeep is monumental.

Paper clips are agnetic and are therefore most likely to be made out of iron or steel. Both these metals rust when exposed to oxygen, water, salt water. Plastic goating or galvaising can help however if the protective coverings are damaged the paper clip underneath will rust. It may not be the quickest process but it will happen as rusting is simply oxidation.

i'm no longer confident that is the fastest, yet a calcium chloride answer is one which will also reason chrome or chrome metal to rust. A zinc lined (galvanized) paper clip or nail and an advanced metal needle will all oxidize promptly. A penny is copper plated zinc and could nonetheless oxidize even besides the undeniable fact that they don't call it rust.

Yes they can.

I've had some that have.

They are coated with an anti-rust metallic compound, but if they are damaged then they will start rusting.

Assumeing there's no plastic then yes they do. See for yourself and just leave one in water for a few days.

yes, they are not galvanised as they are cheap and not designed to be left out in the rain!
