I live in China. I'm constantly heckled and cat-called by many locals here. This, although not very refined, is certainly not seen as an insult by Chinese people. The insult is just in my head, due to my having grown up in America where such behavoir isn't acceptable.
I love living here, and I want to stay. But I find myself pissed-off almost once an hour at the way many people treat me.
Many Chinese people have explained why some folks act this way toward me, and there are very understandable reasons. But no matter how much I come to understand, it still pisses me off and the result is that I'm a jerk to about half the people I meet on the street. Usually because I have just taken what they've said or done as an insult.
I guess my delima is how to put intro practice what know I should do. How can I overide my basic cultural reflexes and better adapt to my environment? What I was taught as a child is nonfunctional here. Maybe I should just grow up. Thanks.

I've been living for many years in Taiwan and I kind of know what you mean. It is absolutely useless to get angry and it is definitely stupid to try to change their system (I was stupid once...). Now, when somebody says something that I consider an insult, I smile and I say "All the same to you, sir. All the same to you..."

look at first place at your wears, your haircut, the way that you smile when you see people at the street ...
look carefull at starting words in converstion ... do not be more or less what you are in real...

So ... standing at this allegation you shall understand yourself a litle much beter before start making any changes ...
Anyway keep cool , and be frendly and helpfull , but do not overburn the situations at first place ...

Smile, smile and smile.

There's a magic in smile,
1. if you smile to someone, if he/she normal, he/she will reply your smile.

Keep smilling than all people around you will think that you are a nice guy/gal.

2. Smile to people who insult you, they'll shame on them self, and will change their attitude to you by the time flow.
