Money supply. Controlled by interest rates. Controlled by the Reserve banks of each individual countries. Depending on inflationary elements. More money, More liquidity, more funds to invest. Demand &Supply. More money to chase stocks. Money is controlled also by several big institutions that manage the pension funds, the superannuation. They dictate the investing policy. The price of a stock is determine by its valuation. It can be over or undervalued based on its assets and also its future earning potential. If they are solid and good, people don't mind paying abit more for the stock. Thus the PE ratio. Price to earning. A high PE means how much the stock is worth per annual income. A high figure signifies a high valuation. End of the day, how much is the stock worth is based on how much another person is willing to buy. In a falling market, it becomes worthless very fast. Thus wealth is destroyed. Nobody benefits. It just gone.
