I am going to assume (because I'm not a smoker) that people do not want to be trying to feed themselves and hold a cigarrette at the same time. Would you chew gum, and then take it out before each bite? I think it's the same deal here.
I'm originally from NY and now smoking is banned in all public places (minus certain bars/clubs). Now I live in Kentucky and it's a much different story. I always request non smoking and let my friends know ahead of time. I've never had a complaint.

I would suggest that you not sit in the smoking area, or take a seat well away from it.
When I smoked I couldn't believe the nerve of some non-smokers! Had an older woman, not paying attention to what she was doing, almost walk into my cig then she had the nerve to tell me that I almost burned her. I reminded her that I was standing still and it was she that almost caused the burn, not I.
Had another couple, sitting in smoking section, ask me to put out my cig because they didn't like the smell. I told them that maybe they shouldn't have taken a table in the smoking section.
I wasn't a rude smoker. If asked not to smoke in their house, I didn't. If asked not to smoke in their car, I didn't. My sis-in-law asked me not to smoke in MY car, and while I did anyway, I limited it and rolled the window down all the way.
While everyone is jumping on the "non-smoking" band wagon, allow me to ask a question. Why are we not fighting drunk driving as hard as we do the smoking issue? When was the last time you heard of some one killed in a car crash because the drivers were under the influence of tobacco?

Ok Unlike others on this board I am going to stick to the original question and NOT be insulting or give other answers that don't pertain to the question.
I used to smoke nearly 2 packs a day for 30 years until I quit 7 yrs ago so I am speaking from experience. The cigarette taste spoils the flavor of food while your eating, not to mention its very hard to inhale a cigarette while your chewing. You see, chewing takes a certain amount of time and while your doing that your cigarette lays there burning away. They are extremely expensive so it's a waste to light one up while your busy eating, but it's a sad thing that people need one to relax after a meal. That was my biggest hangup to overcome after quitting. But to answer its a waste of money to smoke while eating.

Well I'm the only one here who agrees with you. They're rude , ill mannered and stink of nicotine. Thank god for smoke free restaurants.
My dad is the worst for it and he smokes a pipe. As soon as HE has finished HIS food, he lights his pipe at the table while we're still eating, If we complain, he tells us to go elsewhere. So, when he comes to my house....he's not allowed to smoke at all, or in my 3 other siblings either....Serves him right!
It's not all smokers though, my mum smokes and wouldn't dream of smoking in a restaurant.

The French do.
Having to breathe in smoke while i eat is one of my pet hates.
Some smokers are the most selfish people around. I cannot bear it when they smoke around their children.

smokers smoke to keep theier hands and lips occupied..its a way of keeping busy..this is a known fact by means of surveys.
whne they eat they are busy with both hands and THEIR MOUTHS..SO why interfere with a good meal and mix the taste of smoke with food ? that will be like mixing honey and tomatoe sauce..it does not work..the food already gives them the spike they need.
