Should it be legal? If so, why? If not, why?

[EDIT]so it seems most of you guys are for the death penalty. but take the following into consideration. something to think about. i agree, murderers should be locked away. but i think they should have the choice to be executed or not. we all make mistakes, we all break the law, sometimes we learn and sometimes we do not. removing a murderer from the world does not remove the crime. murders will occur everyday for the rest of our lives. i understand a lot of families go through a lot of agony, but i think the only reason that we want the person killed is for our own satisfaction. for example, stanley "tookie" williams. co-founder of the crips was executed recently due to murder. in jail, stanley began writing literature to keep mainly kids away from gangs. he was nominated to win the nobel peace prize for literature. to me i see his death not hurting or helping or community, but i see his existence as a help. the lives that he has changed with his literature has done us more good.

We should get rid of it.

I'm not against the killing of a non-reformable killer mind you. I am against the multimillion additional dollars it takes to take an inmate through the whole process to his death.

An inmate can be imprisoned for life for cheaper than the amount it takes to finally get an inmate executed for his crimes.

First a fact... No one that commits a crime thinks they are going to get caught. So the concept of a death penalty as a deterrent is a failed argument. Lock a murderer up for life without the chance of parole. Never let them breathe a free breath again. As far as the argument that it costs taxpayers money, jailing any criminal costs the public money. We can't execute them all, so don't execute any.

I would be more likely to cut a murderer some slack over child molesters, rapists and drug dealers. They prey on the weak and defenseless. I saw on the news today where a 2 yr old died of sexual related activity. If there were public hanging/flogging for such offenses it might deter some from such activity. Punishment should be a deterrent. The constant appeals and reviews of cases should be limited as well. Maybe we need to clean up the gene pool a little bit, by eliminating the bad parts.

History has proven that innocent people have been wrongly executed because the powers in charge had a personal agenda on their mind.

With the death penalty in place it allows the state the power to KILL anyone it wants to. The platitudes "innocent until proven guilty" or the "state has to go through a lot of hurdles to execute someone" mean NOTHING.

If they, for whatever reason wanted to eliminate YOU they COULD and they WOULD.

i feel that if the person in question committed a crime that would merit having the death penalty, it should them be followed if the family of the victim wanted that justice to be carried out. I personally would rather have the person on death row, or sentenced to death have to spend the remaining days or years of their life in a medievil prison. A straw pallet, water and gruel.. Then they might feel sometimes death would be a better alternate.

Yes, it should be legal. I work 2 of my 8 hours a day just to pay taxes. Why? So I can support the man who kidnapped, raped and killed my 9 year-old cousin? I don't want to support the man who molested, beat and murdered my friend, Micky, and burned her pets to death either.

What about the man down the road who raped six and seven year old sisters? He got three years in prison. Think that'll cure his evil? I think not.

Yes. I support the death penalty and support more severe penalties for violent and/or sexual crimes against children.

Penalties/fines and jail sentences do not scare the hard core criminals enough. Selected crimes get the death penalty to deter the crimes/criminals. It works in some countries - death penalty for drugs and guns and these countries are drugs and guns-free, an environment where one feels safe and great place for bringing up kids.

I believe the death penalty is wrong. If we kill someone for being a murderer then we are just as bad as they are and I don't think killing anyone is right, even if they did something so horrible. Everyone deserves a second chance.

i think it is justified...it is not like we don't know what is against the law...i feel like if they kill someone (and whatever other charges can send u to death row) u deserve the same fate...i just wish it wouldn't take them so long to kill them once they are sentenced to death row. what is up with all the appeals....how many appeals did their victims get? all prisoners ought to have to work for every thing they get in prison too...this is a bunch of crap for them to lounge around all day and get room and board and three squares a day provided for them because they went out and broke the law.

Death penalty is legal because it is a deterrent for the commission of heinous crimes and a proper penalty for a crime that caused death/s.
