It's some organization for women for... what?

It is an organization started in 1998 by a woman named Sue Ellen Cooper. I believe she started it in California. She knew that there were not a lot of social clubs for women who were fifty years of age and older and decided to do something about it. There are over one million women who are registered members as of April of last year-2005. It originally started with a small group of women who would meet monthly, wear red hats with purple accents, to have lunch, including tea and just socialize. Now it has grown into a worldwide organization of mature women from all walks of life, who are volunteering in hospitals and nursing homes, working for non-profit organizations and raising funds for disaster victims, working with the homeless and victims of domestic violence and many other organizations. I personally am looking forward to being fifty and joining with such a great group of people to socialize and help others. The red hat with purple idea comes from a poem which states; "when I am an old lady I am going to wear purple...and a red hat that doesn't go..." With all the terrible things that are going on in the world, we all need to contribute in a positive way; just to keep that glimmer of hope going for all of us and future generations. Have a good night!!

A group of age 50 and over women who get together and wear red hats and eat lunch. Really, that's what it is. It's the most pointless group of people on the planet. Also, the members have to honor the Queen (the woman who begins each group). It's really ridiculous and a gigantic waste of time. Most of these groups end up disbanding after a year or so. Their claim to fame is - they wear red hats, and that was inspired by some asinine poem.

I'm a member of The Red Hat Society, we are all women 40 and older who are tired of being called "middle-aged" at 40 while men aren't called that until they are 55! We celebrate the fact we are older women, wiser women and still, most of all, women. We are not man-bashers, but have discovered a secret, for most women life BEGINS at 40!

Its a club for ladies of a certqin age (meaning they are so old they
don't want to say anymore) who get together for chat, fun, support
wacky flings, etc. They have clubs all over the US now, probably a
couple of web sites, and each member needs to have a red hat.

it comes from a poem, when i am old i shall wear purple and a red hat that does not match. so they wear purple with red hats and meet for shopping and tea and generally enjoying their senior years.
