I prefer longer books which allow the author to develop in detail the story, fill it with complex plots, facts and theories that allow you to use your imagination to probe alternate realities and give you opportunities to become involved emotionally and intellectually involved in the story and characters. If you can identify with people or issues in the story, the reading experience becomes much more satisfying.

That would depend on the quality of writing. If it's good it can be anywhere between 50-1000 pages and still interest me. If it's not well written I usually don't read the whole book. If I've got nothing better to do, I read the same book multiple times in a row.

I prefer quality over quantity. A lot of 200 or so page books are good. But LOTR was also good. Size doesn't matter. At least thats what my girlfriend says to make me feel better.

If I'm gonna pay big bucks for a book, I expect it to be fat and full of so many characters that it makes my head spin. And when I come to the last sentence of the last page, I want to wish that it never ends. I want to go out searching for more of what that particular author has written. I want to be entertained.

Both have their charms. I do love sprawling historical epics. But there are other times when I just don't want to devote a week or more of my life to reading a novel. Slim books that can be read in a sitting or two have their place.

I love to read, but only if the stories ARE GOOD, so I would have to go with the epic-size 900 plus pages.

if the story appeals to me, it doesn't matter how big or small the book is. In fact, for my favourite genre i.e. Fantasy, the good books often come in series... :)

it depends on the time of reading. if i was reading while in the bathroom, i would rather read a short story, but i would like a thick book such as the Red Tent.
