We have our modem plugged into a wireless router. The desktop has a wireless device to access the Internet, and, I am in the other room even as I type on my laptop. After my sister gets her new laptop she will be able to access the Internet too through the wireless router.

If you just need to connect two pc`s to a cable modem you can simply buy a second network card for the desktop pc. You plug the laptop into the pc and the pc into the cable modem. Then enable sharing on the desktop pc and there you go. This works well for us on a cable modem installation. The cost of a second network card is minimal compared to router prices. The ADSL router will look for a ADSL line when it is switched on and will probrably not work with cable. I would keep the ADSL router as you will possibly need it in the future and you get nothing for them second hand really.

It depends on the router. Normally they are only used to allow different ports to connect to the (ADSL) internet, but using it as you suggest requires it to allow the ports to connect to each other, and ignore the fact that the (ADSL) internet is not connected. Try it and see. If it doesn't work you can just get an ordinary router to put in between your PC/laptop and your cable modem.

Hi, you will probably find that your cable modem requires a DSL router (linksys WRT54GS-UK for example) and not ADSL. NTL and Telewest cable regions do not use ADSL.
