I watched Woodstock with my 22 and 10 year old tonight. We had a discussion. It is funny.........the kids then felt adults did not understand. Now I don't understand. My kids do not have any political views. I have always been a activist. Is the climate of today just to be apathetic?

In this day and age we in America are dealing with a government that is .............this is not about politics......or maybe it is....kids today do not care. If they can't get a download, were sold a bogus dvd, had thier wages garnished for child support............they might protest.

These kids are not interested in the world ......just them!

I guess my real question is why we live in this society of " what happens happen!" In stead of , " I can make a difference!!"

Good question and I have thought about this too... this move towards being all about self and apathy.

I haven't worked out the details but I think it is a combination of mass propaganda through very accessible television, capitalism that rewards wealth over all else and frankly, lack of suffering.

Mass propaganda - what I mean is like when all the teenagers and kids grow up watching 90210 where everything is about self and what you have. And the expectation that everything is easy and is handed to you without hard work. What happened to the humility of The Waltons?

Capitalist social rewards - what happen to having respect no matter what job you did. That just having a job made you a respectable member of society. Today we reward anyone with money in his wallet. You see this everywhere you go. You see it at restaurants where the guy with the money gets a better table, etc... we teach out children that the more money you have increases your value. We also teach our kids that it is ok to gain wealth at the cost of others. The Donald Trumps of the world are our heros now. Once again, what happened to The Waltons?

Lack of suffering - you know as well as I do, that some of the greatest authors, etc... spawned out of the great depression. I think a society or generation that has no PERSONAL contact with human suffrage just naturally becomes apathetic.

The bottom line of a teenager or young adult today is...'as long as I can buy these shoes, buy this new car, get that latest PS2 game, get that new music CD... my world evolves around ME.

None of these kids realize the battles we fought for them to bring them to where they are today. The women's marches burning our bras when we were told the best job we could have was a secretary. Or the confrontations we had against the majorities who didn't want blacks in their same schools or restaurants. Or when we stood up against a meaningless war that was killing 100,000s of Americans. That depth of protesting made our country think twice for 20 years before jumping into another war. They have no clue.

I was too young to participate in this stuff but my Jewish mother was a big activist and it left an enormous impact on me. I remember the dinner table discussions vividly and don't know where we are headed as a society today.

Baby boomers sold out, and wasted teh environment and their opportunities to make positive change

Gen X became the first modern cynics

The subsequent generations are pragmatists.
They will choose their fights and not try to change everything and subsequently succeed more fully.

They will not have the freedoms of the Boomers and will not miss them as we trade freedom for security.

They will waste less time, but still waste time as that is what all idle classes do.

None of us are the generation of the Great Depression and World War II. No one on Earth will ever be that great again.

For the record, I'm Gen X and my kids are 17, 14, 11, and 2
A pretty great bunch, but I'm biased.

Compromise and pragmatism are the keys to the survival of mankind.

The 'worked annoying to grant you what to procure' era. they did no longer have a house for years and positioned issues on carry for their young infants. They have been unselfish. Our era is egocentric and self generic with an instantaneous gratification concern like yours. =

they aren't taking the drugs you use to do...so they don't have a screwed up view of the world thinking everything can be solved by hugging trees or talking things out...who knows maybe they are smarter than you...they are interested in it...but might not show it to you because they have a different way of thinking...away from the influence of drugs...and if they show their view to you...you will condemn them for it...

Kids then were only interested in themselves, too.

They wanted to get high.
They wanted sex.
They wanted no rules.
They didn't want to defend their country.
