Only if you "sync" your iPod Shuffle.

You can turn off the sync feature and then just move songs back and forth if you want.

Not necessarily, but itunes needs to be able to locate your songs on your hard drive. So if you erase the song on your hard drive and come back to sync your ipod, you'll end up losing that song. Best thing to do is have one folder on your c drive where you keep all your music, call it 'library' so you can easily keep track of it.
