An emphatic NO.
However, if you can show / prove that you did it not to kill the person but to temporarily disable that person to prevent him / her from killing your pet (like shot in the leg or the hand holding the gun) then you have some chance legally. You also need to prove that your pet was innocent and was under extreme provocation from that person and that your pet was no real danger to that person. Your pet's behaviour history is also important. Get some very good recommendation from your neighbours, if you can.

Legally you can be freed by thecourt if you kill someone who tries to shoot\kill you if it is made clear that you killed the other one in self defence. But if the other is innocent you might be at risk

I am a pet lover myself but unfortunately the law does not permit killing a person for any reason.
Although laws are different in different parts of the world the logic still holds that Human life is considered as the most important life when compared against other living beings.

self defence is a term commonly misunderstood n misused by people. in the court of law, a murder committed in lieu of self defence is a pardonable crime. but there is a thin line between violence n self defence which should not be ignored.

if your pet is a direct treat to the person, he can shoot your pet (if you do nothing to take your pet away from him), the only way you can shoot him or her, is that he also pointed at you, and your gun has to be the same or smaller caliber, it also has to happen all in the same time, both of you armed at same place and time.

I don't think it's legal unless they are attacking the owner as well... which is self defence.

No, I don't think so...unless, perhaps, the person was trying to shoot your animal. You'd really have to ask a lawyer about that one.
