In the book ,which was so much better than the movie, Jack Torrance becomes facinated with the overlooks history and notices an eerie pattern of ownership that involves the mega-rich personality of Horace "Harry" Derwent. I never figured out if this charachter had some evil interest in the hotel or what. Even as the hotel prooved to be a moneypit he kept it on his radar for decades. Does anyone have any insight that I may have missed from the book?

I think the Hotel had more of an evil interest in Derwent than the other way around. It needed someone it could control to make sure it stayed "alive". The same way it needed Jack.
