Empty the Trash Can
Clear out any Temp Directories
Clear IE Cache (Tools, Delete Temporary Internet Files)

Get a copy of Toniarts Easycleaner, its Free, and quite good

To get that bit of extra space if your system is up to date and stable, you can delete the Windows Update files, but you need a program to do it.

If all of that does not clear about 1gb, I would be surprised.

Have you deleted them from your recycle bin as well - you need to do that to free up disk space. Also try getting rid of your temporary internet files if not already done so. After a while there can be a lot of them taking up a lot of space. In Internet Explorer click on Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files.

Delete your temporary files under
C:\Documents and Settings
\USERNAME
\Local Settings
\Temp

Also, make sure you empty your recycle bin. Your trash also counts towards your disk space.

also if you're using downloaders such a bitTorrent they're using a lot of space, bacause they shatter the file. defragmentation helps but only for a while..
