Dell wins by a mile. You can get twice the machine for half the price of a Sony.
Sony = good machine but WAY OVER Priced.
Sony= sometimes compatibility issues with other manufactures. The DUO mem card will burn out a HP Printer card reader and some other manfacturer card readers as well. If you want to expand or upgrade in the future sometimes you can only use Sony upgrades as they are the only ones that work.
In other words Sony only works with Sony more than 50% of the time.

Dell explodes. (See link below - they have problems with their battery.) Sony is expensive. (We all know that.)
Tough decision. I'd go for an IBM Thinkpad (now Lenovo).
But if that's not a choice I'd rather get a Sony. Safety comes first.
