i took my computer into the store and I said i wanted to upgrade to 1GB. the salesperson told me i needed this "pc4300/533mhz/ddr2". my question is what do "I" need to know so that i can compare prices and what not

Google the model number of your laptop or locate the full spoecififcations, it will tell you in detail exactly what you need, as well as the amount of slots available for RAM...

it is recomended to have 1 GB ram because it is as per the min req of windows vista

the salesperson already told you what you need. just find that kind of memory with 1GB capcity youre looking for. Other kinds wont work so please comply for your PC's safety.
