Lawyers typically aren't the interpreters of the law... they're the arguer for the person who wants to benefit from the law. A judge can be an Enlighs major, a judge can be a historian, because that's what's so much more important, a judge can be anything. I can see how being a lawyer would hinder them because lawyers have the special interest of their client in mind whereas a judge can't have special interests. Lawyers know how to run arguments using the law, but they can't interprete it actually. Just because they both work in what we call courts doesn't mean they're both doing the same thing.

Being a lawyer means that one has a license to practice law. As such, lawyers are more likely to know the "how" of law - what is and isn't currently legal, how to work the system, etc.
Supreme Court justices need to be more concerned about the "why" of the law - why a particular statue is worded a certain way, what to do when two laws require contradictory actions, etc. For the second category, a professor of law might be more appropriate.
Then again, even though there isn't a legal requirement that judges be admitted to the bar for that court's juristiction, I can't recall the last time that a non-lawyer served as a Supreme Court judge.

Because the Constitution does not require it. Which is a good thing, because getting a workable definition of a lawyer is not as simple as it might seem. However, most justices these days are lawyers, which is probably a good thing because judging is quite a foreign experience to most people. If you attend a court proceeding, you will see why.

we might be better off if none of them were. Good sense and a law degree, as well as ethical behavior and a law degree just don't seem to be compatable
