Yes, there was a real Dracula, and he was a true prince of darkness. He was Prince Vlad III Dracula, also known as Vlad Tepes, meaning "Vlad the Impaler." The Turks called him Kaziglu Bey, or "the Impaler Prince." He was the prince of Walachia, but, as legend suggests, he was born in Transylvania, which at that time was ruled by Hungary.

Folk tales of Vlad have been verbally passed down and because of the war era of which Prince Vlad III lived, the nature of his fighting and cruelty to are central to these stories. It is felt that as these stories passed onwards, the basis for the Bram Stoker's fictional Dracula has been created

A myth based on fact.
Count Dracula was a real person quite bloodthirsty and feared by the people around him. He may have been drinking blood as this has been a habit for certain people for example warriors drinking the enemy's blood to get their strength, but I very much doubt that he was undead!

Dracula himself was real. In a manner of speaking. To give the short form he was Vlad the Third of Wallachia (1431 – 1476) who adopted the nickname Dracula (Dragon). His favored method of disposing of his enemies was impalement. He would then drink their blood. Also the basis for the novel Dracula.

Dracula is loosely based on a medieval prince called nicknamed Vlad "the impaler"....he used to drink his victims blood but he wasn't a vampire as in he needed blood to survive and would die if in sunlight...so they are largely myth.
