I find it ironic that some Communist countries are OK to do business with (China), but some are totally out of the picture (Cuba). China has some of the worlds worst human rights laws, and their corporate business world is completely corrupt, but then you have the Cubans stuck in complete poverty. I know that we do business with China because they use a small fraction of their population for slave labour to undercut the rest of the world, but would it be so bad if we did business elsewhere?

Canada does business with Cuba. China needs our raw materials. The business we do with them can't be done elsewhere. If we don't do the business with them, someone else will. They are the buyers and they hold all the cards. It may be unfortunate but that's how it works. If we lose that business there would be several areas of our country that would be poverty stricken. The more contact China has with countries like Canada and the US the more its free market grows which slowly will reduce it's human rights offences.

China has far more resources than tiny Cuba, and it also offers far cheaper (if not free) labour with a government willing to look the other way and a media system chained by the government, so why not?

Although the US does not do business with Cuba, Canada does.
