Does it only happen at night?

You may have a leak in the U-bend.

Every toilet almost since it was invented has a U-shaped pipe which stores a small amount of clean water. This prevents air and gasses from getting back up the pipe through the toilet and into the house. If there is a leak in the U-bend, gas could be leaking into the house.

Check your pipes, and flush a few times to flush-out the pipes. Also make sure that you don't have a sewer line leak inside the walls. Check the walls for wet spots, listen for leaks while you're flushing clean water through and keep tabs on when the smell arrives. (only at night, all day but you don't notice etc).

To give your nose a fresh start, go to www.approachit.net and get a bottle of their stuff. It'll completely eliminate the odor and help you breathe easier so that you can try to identify exactly where the odor is coming from. (It'll also save you from damaging your eyes).

Good luck!

Been in the field for 20 yrs so if you smell sewer gas upstairs there is a leak somewhere either the wax ring or a crack in the venting. Even thought the wax ring is to stop water leaks it can leak gas.
also when did this start do you have sleep upstairs? is someone useing the down stairs bathroom and them you notice it upstairs?
Also make sure at night when you smell it look in the bowl to make sure there is water in it. YOu might have a problem somewhere else in the system and its sucking the water out of the bowl and your getting gas from that.
There are so many things it could be if you like E-Mail me at

The most likely suspect would be the toilet has a bad/failed seal ring (wax ring). To fix this, you will need to pull the toilet, clean off the bottom of the toilet and drain pipe, install a new wax ring, and reinstall the toilet. It's fairly simple, but a lot of work, so you will need to decide if you can tackle this task or hire a professional. By the way, you should get this fixed as quickly as possible, not only from an aesthetic stand point, but a health stand point.

Make sure the toilet bowl is full of water.

It could be sewer gas which is potentially deadly.
The water blocks the gas from entering thru the drainpipe.
If the water is shut off in there for some reason, at least make sure the toilet stays full.

If you have a washing machine hooked to a drain that goes to the sewer pipe, make sure there is an S shaped section on that pipe place for water to collect.

You could be the victim or the famous "double boiler the gift that keeps on giving" if you have friends like me that are paying you back for a prior prank. Its consists of making a doodie in the tank and waiting for it to cook.it makes the tank water smell and every time you flush it gives you another dose of LOVE..
Nice way to pay friends back LOL

The stench of ammonia is enough to make your eyes water. There is ammonia in our wee. If you cannot flush your toilet properly, then ammonia will build up. Check your pipes outside the house, maybe a rat or a cat has got stuck up there.

Weird, I know, but it does happen.

Either you left a lethal fecal deposit in there or it is backing up from the sewer. It would backup into the downstairs toilets and sinks long before it gets upstairs.

sounds like you have an obstruction in you vent pipe, find a sewer guy that works from the roof and talk to them. Look for independants they are often cheaper than the name brand folk. They might be able to help you for next to nothing. Where do you live? be very careful, sewer gas is deadly

Is it a septic system? if so,,, you might have to call for septic treament. This should be done a least once a year,

If is not a septic but City sewer, try to empty in the toilet at least one gallon of clorox, This might help

Previous answer was good. You need a plumber because you are smelling sewer gases. The system is leaking somewhere so the plumber will just have to check it out.

Don't delay!!
