The U.S. has a red alert for flights coming in from Britain. Everything else is on orange alert. Or that's how it was a little while ago and I don't guess it has changed in the last few minutes or anything.... See the yahoo homepage, it has links to recent news stories etc. What happens now is you can't take liquids or gels or creams in your hand luggage on a plane - they have to go in checked bags - and you cannot carry your Starbucks coffee or any other drink from the terminal onto the plane - and you have to get to the airport a long time before your flight because there are lines to go through screening.

"are we in red alert?"

Yes, we are. (Ooohhhh, be afraid! Because paranoia is patriotic!)

"what happens now?"

Nothing happens now. The government's big, scary color-of-the-week is just a fear-mongering tool to scare you and thereby more easily control you. So it's red today...did I do anything differently? No. Am I any safer then I would be if it were "orange" day? No. Or "blue" day? No. Are our porous borders and ports suddenly safe now that the color has changed? No.
Get the picture? It doesn't mean anything. It's just propaganda.

The U.K.'s in Red alert stage (Imminent), the U.S. has all U.K. bound flights at Red (Severe), and domestic at Orange (Hightened).

Don't know where you live, so there's the answers for both countries.
