the excuse that you have to go to a family event always works for me because, they assume that unlike the work event, the family event is almost always mandatory.

Tell them the truth - It wasn't your scene and you had some personal matters to attend to like going to the bank, seeing a doctor, visiting a sick relative or visiting your parents.... something that's urgent but not life or death....

if it isn't madatory that you go i don't think you need to think of an excuse...you may feel alittle weird that you don't have one...but if you don't wanna go then don't...you don't need to explain yourself to someone else
