The reason you don't see anyone scream is because it is a relief knowing that soon, you will feel nothing but pressure. Yes..it does hurt. They put a needle into your spine. Just thinking about it makes my back hurt!!

I had an epidural and I wouldnt say it hurts much. I had a planned Csec and I wasnt affected by labour pains, (it is hard to stay still, so it hurts more) it stings a bit first but the worst part is feeling it entering the spine. It is more the idea that smthing is going into your spine than the actual pain. you get a numbing shot first and then the epidural. The epidural part lasts only a few seconds if the doc has experience.
I had no side effects or back pain even though I was so scared that I told my doc I want general:)

I have had 2 epidurals and they both hurt. the first one not as bad as the last but i believe that the last anesthesiologist who performed the epidural did not know what she was doing. She stuck me in the back 4 times before she got the needle in where it needed to be. i have chronic back pain from her hitting something that she should not have hit. i also didn't realize this chronic back pain until i was off the pain pills they had given to me ( i had a c-section both times).
If it is not absolutely necessary i would not do an epidural or anything else that has to do with your spine because there are so many nerves that can be hit and messed up for life.
I'm not saying that the same thing will happen to you but be cautious anyway don't do anything that you do not need to do.
Good Luck and Congratulations!!!!

ok i cannot believe your worried about this but i say this 3 babies later..here is my feelings on it..
The epidural helps you be able to deal with the pain and yes it hurts but not as bad as that labor you could have i was having labor pains and had to stay still. You sound scared to me..and the thing is you can have someone hold your hand or pick someone to talk you through it to help you get through it the main thing is not to feel the baby coming out and that would be my focus..If this is your first and sounds like it is you will be ok all this is worth it to see the baby a great love comes over you like you never felt before...Everything will be ok you will make it..

Before they give you the Epidural they apply numbing medicine. I wouldn't say it hurt, however, its just uncomfortable. However, imagine the pain you'd feel if you didn't get it. Some people complain of back pain after they have it removed, however, I don't think it last for long. If you're nervous speak to your OBGYN and find out if there are any other options for pain.

I think that some people say that getting an epidural hurts is because it hurt them. Not everybody agrees that it hurts actually I thought that it was going to hurt myself when I got one because of EVERYBODY else saying that it was going to but it didn't really it just felt like well you know how when your getting ready to get your ear piecered and you think that it's going to hurt? it feels like that a little but everyone is different so it varies from woman to woman.

Hell yes it hurts, and holdin' somebody's hand doesn't help. I couldn't have drugs, I had to do it naturally. I was the screaminest thing in that whole damn hospital. It's so worth it though. You really do forget all about it when you hold your baby.
