I find that the preparatory laxative drink that is given to patients before a colonoscopy to clean them out seems to have an ingredient in it that I have a reaction to. I start retching and vomiting just from the smell of it let alone drinking it. Now, I can eat and drink some pretty gross things with no problems, so it's not a matter of taste or smell. It seems to have an ingredient in it that I have some sort of allergic reaction. I have the same reaction when I drink Gatorade, but I can't seem to find a common ingredient.

Does anyone else have this problem? If so, what is the cause???

They now offer another alternative - they are pills called Visicol and you take a total of 28 of them (as indicated in your doctor's instructions). You take them in groups of 4 with 8 ounces of water. I hate gatorade so I knew I had to take the pills. My daughter "gags" when she gargles with salt water, so she knew that she would only be able to take the pills. My husband used to drink the liquid, which he always dreaded - so much of it and it tastes aweful. This last time, he took the pills and loved how easy it was. Anyway, if you're interested in "the timing" of the pills - e-mail and I will send the info to you. Take care.

Send me your e-mail address - I can't seem to e-mail you back through my yahoo account (syntax error) or through Yahoo Answers (says uncomfirmed e-mail address). Sorry.

Yes, some people do not tolerate this preparation at all. You need to ask your doctor for something else (there are a couple of things). Obviously, if you cannot keep it down it will not do what it is supposed to. And to the twit who mentioned Barium (an alleged RN who doesn't know WHAT she is talking about. as they don't give barium for colonoscopies, only upper and lower GI's - there is a HUGE difference) skip her comments. Ask the doctor and forget the yahoos on Yahoo!

Maybe you could look up the name of the preparatory laxative at http://www.drugdigest.com Maybe there will be additional information regarding the laxative on the site including possible allergic reactions.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
