The captains dog...I don't know the author, sorry. It will be under young adult in most librarys. It is about the exploration of the west (of the US)

It can be Jack London's 'The Call of the Wild' or
'Timbuktu' by Paul Auster. Perhaps a different one. I only know these two where the narrator is a dog.
