I've read all the plays, and about half are masterpieces. Here are my top 5:
1) Hamlet - One of the responses here was that Hamlet is just a soap opera....perhaps. But it's also the greatest thing ever written in the language.
2) King Lear - Comes behind Hamlet only because Lear is not quite as sympathetic as Hamlet.
3) Macbeth - Blood-drenched poetry....gotta love it.
4) Tempest - Beautiful story of forgiveness.
5) 1 Henry IV - The best of the too-often-neglected History plays.
For the person who suggested that Shakespeare was just another writer from 1590-1613, nothing special. I know that's the current PC tack, and I'll say that I like some Marlowe and Webster better than some of the lesser Shakespeare plays, but the best 25 or so plays written at the time were by Shakespeare.

As a matter of fact I like all of his plays and sonnets. Othello was terrific. Have you seen any of the Dead Wood HBO series? They are very Shakespearean in character and manner of speech. Vulgar to an exquisite blush but so real you can't look away. Any way that is the beauty of William Shakespeare. It is not necessary to make up your mind which one you love the best, you can keep reading them all. Hamlet is one I always seem to remember best though. If I were doing a stage production and had to choose one that I could direct it would be Hamlet. Then again Romeo and Juliet might be an enchanting experiment, don't you think? It has been years since I have gone and seen any Shakespeare festivals. No one seems to be that interested any more. Perhaps I'll venture off by myself again and renew old acquaintances from that yesteryear nirvana. Happy reading!

Macbeth was the first one I learned in school. Our teacher spent a really long time with us making sure we really understood it! Of course we were 7th graders so what could you expect, right?? Anyway, after that I really enjoyed Shakespeare! But I guess Macbeth will always be my favorite!

He was just a hack, there were other writers of that time that were writing just as good or better, somehow his writings got popular, kinda like most popular movies these days, its always the crappy ones that are popular.
