My Experience:
November 2002 I got mine doon. It didn't hurt while getting done. However, I did have swelling, sore'ness and couldn't talk correctly for about 3 weeks.
I got it re-done in December 2005. (Had to take it out the year before due to entering military).
It didn't hurt, swell or anything. It went through the same hole as before. However, the first time I got it done didn't do it correctly so, I had more bleeding than before.
My best advice is to make sure the place you are going at is a license and follows all regulations. I made the mistake of not doing that the first time and I risked myself greatly. The second time I went to one of the best voted in Southern California.
1) Suck on ice chips an hour or two before to help numb your mouth.
2) Don't eat prior and do brush your teeth. Lightly brush your tongue so you do not make it sore prior.
3) The place should have you rinse out your mouth with mouth wash.
4) Relax, take deep breathe. Always a good step to take.
5) Ask all questions you have. That means, write down a list if you have to. From after care. Things to do and not do. etc.
6) Make sure you are not a smoker. It is best to not smoke or drink. If want to drink, wait at least 6-8 weeks is best for healing purpose's. Don't want to mix the yeast with healing process.
7) Recommended to not be kissing (exchanging another
person's oral saliva or sexually bodily fluids).
Some people it hurts bad and others barley little. Even some don't swell or anything. It all depends on your body and your pain tolerance.
If you have any health defects such as heart or anything to do with your blood. Make sure you are declared by your doctor that it is safe. I have to take antibiotics before I go to dentist or piercings to help block any infections to my heart.
My navel rejected twice and I get bad ear infections. My tongue is only thing that I never had a problem with.
However, be prepared for anything and know you are at risk. Know the severity and get to hospital asap if complications.
Strongly recommend the above!

ya you should. the only real risk is it getting infected. which, if you follow the piercers instructions, wont be a problem. for the first day or 2 you can not eat hard foods so be ready for that. healing time is estimated 3 weeks and you have to clean the piercing twice daily. you have to use a soft toothbrush. thats about it though... oh and it takes about a week to relearn how to talk normal with that hunk of metal weighing down your tongue.so try to get it done over a long weekend or a break so you dont have issues in school. happy piercing!

Tounge peircings are ok man. But be careful because you are damaging some of your tastebuds and some cases, it caused a slight speech defect. Rock on man!!! Your parents are cool. Mine was a tatoo when I was 17. I didn't inform them about up until now. I'm 28 and I have a stable job. Maybe it's time to tell them soon.

I had a lisp for about a week. I loved my piercing, but I had to take it out after 3 years because one day I noticed ... I don't know how to describe it... ditches? channels? on my teeth. I didn't play with the piercing that much, but when I saw it was wearing down my teeth I immediately took it out.
Like I said, I loved it, and I would probably repeat the experience, but honestly, its been 4 years since I've had it out, and when I get sick, the hole in my tongue still gets sore, and once in awhile my tongue gets swollen. I've talked to others that had theirs pierced and they have the same experience!
... My brother has his nipple pierced and loves it, and I like it too . Tongue piercings are obviously the best, but nipple piercings have fewer lasting after effects, and for women, historically, its actually something they would do with inverted nipples, because piercing the nipple enhances breast feeding!
Anyway whatever you decide, good luck, but stay with plastic balls on the piercings, or rubber, because they'll damage your teeth less (although they get stinky so you have to use listerine EVERY DAY!)

No you should not. Not only can you get a terrible infection, but you will not be able to get very many jobs. Every company I've worked for forbids tongue rings (even if you get a "spacer").
