Yes, there is a book by that title. You can find it at Amazon. The complete title is "Why Am I Afraid to Tell You Who I Am? Insights into Personal Growth by John Powell" (Paperback - Dec 1995). New, it sells for $10. They also have used copies as well and another copy from 1999.

Since you are interested in finding out the answer to the question, which really only you (with the exception of someone who knows you really well), can find inside yourself. The book might help you find it.
I haven't read it. Just wanted to let you know where you could get it.
And good luck in finding out the answer.

Well, you could just do what everyone else in this world does... and blame either your parents, society, or come up with some other stupid excuse. I mean why should anyone just be honest with themselves and admit that they have issues because it is sincerely their OWN personal problem? Can't we take responsibility for anything anymore?
It seems only if its a positive or commendable thing to be proud of, do we actually want to give ourselves the full credit. When we have amazing abilities, or excel in certain areas, we sure like to quickly admit we are good at it. But when it comes to problems, we just pass the blame onto the next person or whoever happens to be most convenient to push the blame onto.
Kind sickening sometimes, ya know?
Soooo.. in all honesty, I really have no idea of why you are afraid to tell us who you are.... but it doesn't really matter because it's not like its necessarily a bad thing. You have rights to your privacy. There's enough creeps in the world to make anyone be a little leery of throwing out personal info.
So smile.... and go with it.
Be yourself, and enjoy it
; )

BM- Have you read that book. I have. I can't remember author as it's packed away, but it was published in the 70's.
Honestly, the book is very dated and I don't agree with much of the author's ideas and findings. As for the question? I myself am afraid to tell people who I am because when I look in the mirror the person staring back at me looks nothing like the me that I feel inside. I am already a stanger to myself. My body and mind are not connected enough. I must know myself to assure my mind is safe around others.

Because you don't know what maniacs are hiding behind the usernames. Any idiot can get an email address from Yahoo for free. And yes that email address gets him access to Yahoo answers. It is possibly the same reason I use a username other than my real name. I don't want some nutcase showing up at my house or continually trying to call me. It isn't being paranoid it is simply being smart. We live in a very dangerous world. Keep being cautious dude.

Because it is wise to be carfull who you tell or who you let into your life. This is your protection that God gives you to keep out the bad and maybe let in the Good, which the Good does not come alone to often. So cherish the Good people that you meet and don't let them in right away, See if they will stay around for a bit and then if they are worthy enough then you might want to share with them who you are.

Because you're afraid we might not like you for who you really are. We live in a world that judges other people very harshly and you don't want to be judged harshly by others. It's risky to put yourself out there, and be an open target for criticism.

Because telling us would mean telling the world. In doing so, you fear that those who despise and hate you would act upon such knowledge as to bring you harm in some sort of way. You fear the wrath of strangers and of familiar enemies.

You also fear the judgement of those, who upon seeing you, would look upon you with distaste and disapproval; this would bring embarrassment and shame upon you.

In short, you afraid to tell us who you are because you uncertain how we would react, and you fear a bad reaction
