Before taking the expenses into consideration, you need to do your research on colleges first. Find a few colleges that come to mind. You can determine this by figuring out whether you want to go to college far away from home or close by. This can determine your living space -- whether you'll need to find an apartment, live on campus, or just stay at home and commute from there. The student population and student-to-teacher ratio are other things to think about: Are you comfortable with a classroom of 100+ students to one teacher? Or do you need close contact with the teacher with less students? This can determine the annual tuition for college which can range anywhere from $600-50,000. Some college websites offer the calculation for you. You might be able to tell that some of these questions raise other questions like, "If I live in an apartment, how much cheaper would it be to find a roommate as opposed to living on campus?" and "How much does the cafeteria cost for students?" or "How much money should I put to groceries and gas?"

One thing for certain though, textbooks can add up to a great sum - especially when you are going to school full time. So you definitely need to reserve a few hundred dollars for the textbooks.

As you may come to observe, the living expenses and tuition varies a great deal from college to college. Some colleges are expensive because they offer wonderful education worth thousands of dollars, while others are relatively cheap campuses that specialize in maybe only one or two departments. It is important to check out a few colleges first before thinking about money issues. Financial aid is also available if you seek it.

To give you an example of the varying costs: a person at a state university can expect to pay a little over $6,000 or less. I attend a private campus, and my annual cost is roughly $42,000. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

I just spent $2,100 in books and tuition for fall. Dorms are $400 a month, $2,000 to eat at the cafeteria. That's just basics at a small state university.
