PSYCHOLOGIST is not an educational, or a medical term.
It is a legal term.
However wierd that may sound, its a fact.
Your opinion about a psychologist is very much true for a clinical or counselling psychologist.
However there are many other psychologists, and their work entails them to do other things than analysing, advicing and helping the mentally ill.
One thing for sure is that all psychologist deal with humans at the MENTAL level, and this level also includes physical dealings.

For example,
at the work place a psychologist is hired to deal with problems faced by employees, how to increase their productivity, and recruitment of employees.

a forensic psychologist would deal with criminal behaviour, solving mysteries behind murders by trying to understand the criminals mind. etc

a sports psychologist would try to get better results out of the team players by mentally prepaering them for it

I would say that's the mainstream notion of a Psychologist, but not what all Psychologists do. Psychology is so varied we sometimes don't have any idea what other Psychologists do.

I'm a psychologist and I do none of those things you listed (at least professionally speaking). I study animal behavior. Not much mental illness there and they don't listen to my advice. However, many of my psychology colleagues do not understand my area of research, nor am I all that familiar with theirs.

What is Psychology anyway, it's all the things that you have mentioned. I feel these Doctor help many people. they have to sit and hear a whole lot of troubled people, then they have to access the problem and place the person on medicine, etc.Sometimes the treatment may take years, so the Psychologist must have a difficult Job. Also, it would have to be very interesting, I think so.

It depends on the field you are studying. I am studying behavioral science, because human behavior fascinates me. It has taught me to be more patient and helped me to understand other earthlings and for that I am grateful. There are many fields of psychology each specializing in various aspects; research, analysis, abnormal behavior etc. Peace to you from frogspeaceflower.
