Many of us are familiar with Fats Domino's "Birds and the Bees."
Michael Quinion reminds us that of the Cole Porter number from 1928, Let’s Do It, which has the lines “Birds do it, bees do it / Even educated fleas do it / Let’s do it, let’s fall in love”. This editor of World Wide Words also noted that an earlier, first explicit use of the phrase ... is in a newspaper, the Freeport Journal Standard, dated 1939: 'A Frenchman was born sophisticated: he knows about the birds and the bees. '
Cecil Adams got it from William and Mary Morris, that the poet Samuel Coleridge: "All nature seems at work ... The bees are stirring--birds are on the wing ... and I the while, the sole unbusy thing, not honey make, nor pair, nor build, nor sing."
I'm thinking that there are earlier uses of the phrase, but this will take more researching. My suspicion is that Virgil or some of the other ancient poets may have used this phrase or a similar one. I'm hoping one of these days to read all of The Georgics, a long poem on farming. I know there's mention there of bee-keeping, but about birds I didn't yet read anything.

because the birds lay eggs and the bees cross pollinate the flowers. It's actually asexual. It's because the Puritan Calvinist attitudes cause people to use phrases like the stork brought the baby and other colloquialisms. There just ashamed of having sex. They should be their body's are appalling. and their minds are weak and they shouldn't breed.

Because birds usually return in the Springtime when a lot of animals are "born", and bees pollenate which helps with flower "reproduction".... Reproduction and Birth...
A more important question would be where in the hell did the stork idea come from???
