It's a measure of the speed that the internal platters spin, which relates directly to how fast the disk is. 7200 is a standard midrange desktop hard drive, and the majority of hard drives are 7200 RPM. 5400 RPM drives are for low cost computers and are significantly slower. High end drives spin at 10,000 RPM and are much more expensive. 7200 RPM drives are the best balance between performance and price.

the hard disk in a computer stores all the info you need to run it. it spins at high speeds (in this case 7200 rpms) it reads the information stored on it as it spins and provides the computer with the data it is asked for. the faster it spins, the faster it can tranfer and write data, 7200 is a pretty good speed (120 turns per second) if youre in the market for a hard drive, and you probably want a 80- 120 GB for today's demanding programs. hope this helps.

a hard drive contains round platters that hold that data. when they say 7200 rpm they mean it spins at 7200 revolutions per minute.
