There is no "best" branch of engineering; it's really all about which one you like the most.
This is a really good website that will tell you about all the different types of engineering:
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos027.htm
What you need to decide is which one is most appealing to you.

hey congrats.. I got out from COEP myself.. Mechie
And if you are a girl, there is no issue.. in fact you'll get a LOT of attention, and help.
The branch matters only if you decide to pursue higher education in the same field.
If you want to join an Infy or any software firm, your branch doesnt matter a lot
But if you wanna join some Engg firm like L&T or Tata Motors, they dont prefer women on their shop floor, coz of the shift duties etc but you can still give it a shot. SOme have made it coz they didnt mind doing a blue collar duty
I'd say stick to Mech, n then work for a coup[le of years after which you can go to the US or IIt for higher studies
All the best!

The branch which is best suited for you is the one that you have an appitude for.
normally Electronics n computer science are more suited for girls, but that should not deter you in case u want to go ahead with mech. Mrs Sudha Narayanan of infosys is a mech engg.
Govt college pune has a good reputation , you could pursue teaching if not intrested in going to industry based job.
also fee at govt coll is very reasonable.in pvt it is v v steep.

I would suggest that you don't go for mechanical engineering. As a girl, I guarantee you that, you will find it very difficult. You can go for ECE, CSE, IT or even EEE, but not for Mech.
