I'm currently employed as a Shipping Clerk and have been working at the same site for 5 years now.The company is very small, Less than 20 employee's. The company has a Water Cooler (for a year and a half) which needs changing here and there. I'll change the water out of courtesy or if female coworkers need help changing it. Changing the water is not in my job description (and I'm not the only male in the company) but my boss verbally makes it my job. Others have offered to change the bottle on their own...I find out that my boss tells them not to, because it's 'MY' job.
I am a Shipping Clerk, NOT a Water Boy! Can my Boss fire me for refusing to change the water bottle? And can he include that in My Job Discription? Do I have ANY rights, If so PLZ let me know.
Thank You

It's just a bottle of water, good grief. You said it's a very small company. Maybe your boss feels you are more careful in changing the water bottle. Maybe he looks at how you go after additional tasks without being asked, which is a noble trait. Administrative staff (bosses) look at these characteristics when evaluations are coming due, in consideration for raises.

Instead of complaining and making yourself appear to be a jerk to your boss, why don't you just change the damn water bottle.

job descriptions tend to change at times.Just curious but if you were a female, who would be in charge of it then? Be a nice guy for now. if another man gets hired , would your boss let you both alternate times of changing the water cooler. ?
After some time has passed that you have willingly changed the water cooler with out having to be asked,Perhaps asking the boss why he prefers you to change it,would get you you answer.
But all in all i guess you didn't get that memo on your job description change.

Do you feel you're too high up in the company to do such a task? All your boss wants you to do is change the water bottle. Maybe he feels you are more capable of doing it the right way and he doesn't like it screwed up like so and so did it when he tried. Be glad he doesn't have you cleaning the bath rooms.

Yes, he can fire you. Yes, he can include it in your job description. How about this: just change the water bottle because you're a nice guy. People do appreciate it you know.
