The big question - if you drink the .NET kool-aid, you make that the thing that all the stuff in your company relies on. And you can only get it from one company, who is a convicted monopolist on several continents. Is that a good business practice?

I would say better than Java 1.5 at this point. While Java is better designed in many ways, pitting Sun against Microsoft isn't really a fair battle. Plus Vista will push .NET down everyone's throats so far you won't know it's there.
If you're looking for something to learn for future job security, .NET is a good bet.

I really don't know, but I liked VB6 better than VB Express. I'm just a novice, but it seems to me that VB6 was more about figuring problems out logically, VB Express is more about syntax.
