An ECG or EKG is an electrocardiogram - a test of the electrical impulses of the heart. The heart lies just behind your breast bones slightly off to the left side at the 5th intercostal ( between the 5th and 6th rib )
The electrodes are placed on the right and left side of your breast bone and then around your left side of your chest. There are specific placements for each of the electrodes to read specific parts of the heart. Then they place electrodes on each of your limbs (usually near the wrists and ankles.
Everyone has to remove their bras, some technicians will allow you to just slide it up or will slip your shirt or gown back over during the test itself ( that is strictly up to the technician) but most will cover with a sheet or gown during the test itself. If you lay quietly and still the test takes less than 30 seconds. There is no sensation to the test.
The people you asked may have had an EEG which is an electroencephalogram - a test on the electrical activity of the brain. The electrodes go on your head.

Yes, for a couple of reasons really, a lot of bras are underwired and will effect the results, and for ease of placing the electrode pads over the chest area and ribcage etc, but if you are uncomfortable it should be done by a female nurse or a dr with a female chaperone, once the pads are placed a blanket or sheet can cover modesty.

I had an ECG done and I had to take off my bra.

Let's be honest here--you saw where the electrodes had to be placed. A bra would have made the task of doing that a whole lot harder, which also causes the potential for the electrodes to shift if the bra interferes with it.

Doctors are trained to be as professional as humanly possible, and you ought to know that sometimes you do have to undress for them to fully check your body's functions.

If I were a Doctor I would say "yes" because a "bra" has metal
and/or other modern applications which could interfere in the
readings of the ECG. Could be that your friends that said "no"
were scanned by an older machine that was not case
sensitive to metal clips, bindings or protease. Your doctor
was correct in his conduct.

i know someone , who had one done in Ireland, and she definitely had to take her bra off. i was a bit surprised because she was lying there naked ,where back home i am sure they would have at least provided a sheet to retain her dignity.

I think that it is standard procedure none the less- especially since some women have very restrictive bras on.

Yes, I've had to. Perhaps it's because bras constrict your breathing and many are underwired - this may affect the flow of electrical current and affect the readings

I'm not a doctor but I don't think an ecg is possible with your bra on.

I had an ECG done, I think i did have to, maybe it just depends on where they place the sensors on your chest. Maybe your just creeped out because you thought the guy just wanted to see your chest. I had a female Dr, and she told me to, but I think that was because I had to, unless she was gay and just wanted to see them, but I doubt that. Dr's are supposed to be professional.
