NO , in the old days the CRT ( cathode ray tube ) screens used to burn Little pixels in the screen if the same image was reflected for a long period of time ( that's why they invented the screen savers then to keep changing the image on the screen) but that is ancient history now

It will not burn up if you leave it on all night. Desktops, as well as laptops, have a fan that is built in. When the internal parts of your laptop get to a certain temperature, the fan kicks in and cools off the parts.

Even if the fan fails, most every laptop made in the last few years has an 'auto-off' that powers down the computer when the processor gets too hot.
It'll be fine

The answer is yes! If the fan quites working, or the air is not allowed to circulate freely around it, then yes it can. The reason is because of the enormous amount of heat that is given off be the electronics. There isn't anywhere for the heat to dissipate to.

No, worst that can happen is if your fan gives out... in which case the computer will overhead and all kinds of bad thigns could happen to the hardware, but burning up isn't one of them.
in response to the yes below, the hardware would break down long before they manage to generate enough heat to cause any kind of fire

I very much doubt it - I have a laptop on the desk next to me and it's been on for about 6 months now. It's nice and warm but not burning up.

Note that it *IS* possible for a laptop to catch fire if there is a malfunction in the battery unit. Lithium Ion batteries in particular are prone to "runaway" issues, causing overheating and occasionally actual flames. Dell, HP, and Apple have *all* had to recall laptop batteries that were failing and being actual fire hazards.

HEY! YOU SHOULD BE MORE WORRIED ABOUT THIS...
A study by State University of New York researchers says heat generated from laptops can significantly elevate the temperature of the scrotum, potentially putting sperm count at risk. http://news.com.com/Study+Laptop+heat+a+threat+to+fertility/2100-1044_3-5485763.html

nope. You could leave it on all month and it wouldn't burn up.
If you are going to leave it on for long periods make sure that you have a screen saver on so the image isn't burned into the screen.
