well, by the etymology, the word mermaid/man means a person of the water. I think that there are likely to be as many different visages or exterior appearances for merpeople as there are for any demi-mythical or mythical creatures. I do doubt the sea-shell bra and bright pink hair type myself, well not doubt them so much as assume that they are a romanticized version of a merperson that someone saw once. In my view, it is much more likely that they are mor like the Celtic selkies; and are dark in appearance and rather dangerous by nature. I sincerely doubt that they have any Ariel-ish desire for human contact, and feel it rather safe to assume that they are rather less humanoid that Mr Disney painted them. Again however, there is a possible link to the Celtic water creatures, being half seal and half woman, who could move between the forms. Perhaps your merpeople can as well. As for origins, they likely originated in the way that centaurs and other half-lings originated, by inter-speciation with a water dwelling race. Whether it was fish or naiad, it is impossible to say, as no one has yet gathered the genetic material to test, and i doubt that anyone ever will.

I've never put much thought into the subject. I always picture mermaids/men as being like the ones in the Disney cartoon. :-)

The mermaid is half fish. Man is half monkey. Sounds pretty good.
