Your given name is your real name. It's the name you were given by your parents when you were born. It's what was entered into the record of your birth and filed with the Dept of Health, Division of Vital Records. Now if you are given a nick name sometime later, that's not your real or given name. But if your are girl, your given or real name becomes the maiden name when the girl gets married and assumed her husband's last name.

Given name is the name given to you at birth by your parents. Anything else would be a nickname. I suppose "real" name would refer to what people actually call you (or, nickname.)

A given name is your first name, and is your real name. The terminology "given name" is not to differentiate your real name from your nickname(s) but rather your personal name from your surname/last name/clan name.

They are both the same.
When someone says 'your given name' they are referring to the name you were given at birth. That's were the phrase comes from.
