In such a situation, I wouldn't go for it. I really value my close friends way too much to indulge in romance with them. But I believe that attitude is not really common.
If you don't think he's your type, then shouldn't you tell him? If you have as good a friendship as you say you do, then I would judge it wise for you to lay it out in the open for him.
If you want to see where it might lead to, there is one advantage that works in your favour. You can be totally and completely honest with him; about your hopes and your fears and your anxiety and everything. If he's a good friend, he'd understand.
If you don't want to pursue it, you should be honest about that too. He should understand.
Sometimes it happens. You get so very close to a friend that you yourself wonder "Now, is this more than friendship? Can friendship really BE this deep?" Platonic love CAN be strong, and it MIGHT make you wonder if it isn't something 'more'. Understand that this may be what he feels too.
So make sure you both know what it is that you want. Imagine the future, and act accordingly.

Things are going to change no matter what answer you give. But the best thing is to be honest. If you are attracted to him go for it. He knows you and you know him, so a lot of the risk has already been taken out of the situation. Be aware though that if things go bad you may lose him forever and friends may get involved which can make things uglier.

go one a few dates see where it goes... if either of you feel a connection and don't want to lose the friendship then don't go for it , if you feel comfertable and think that you can be in a relationship and friendship then go for it ... thats what i did and i've been with my bf now for a year and a half! like they say , sometimes it's better to know the person and be friends with them before you date them! lol

I would pace it. Perhaps tell him you need time and that you have everybody interest at heart here. Also because you guys are all friends etc. You would not want to see anybody get hurt.
It also sounds like you simply don't like him. I would not do it ! But the link below could help you further.

I'd go for him ONLY if I have genuine feelings for him & not because I'm tempted.
You & your bestfriend, no problem.
You & your guy's bestfriend, problem.
You & your bestfriend's guy, big problem!
