ignorance

there are many different reasons for this. Some people are lazy. Some people have come to believe there really isn't a pollution issue. Some people don't understand what they are doing. And other are just used to doing things a certian way. Personally, I have tried to do what I can to help the earth. I try to support our growing organic food industry because they don't use pesticides which pollute our earth. But I can only support it as much as my pocket book allows. I cloth diaper my children. I breastfeed. I take my milk containers and crush them. And many other things as well. Those are just some of the bigger ways I recycle. I want a hybrid car but don't have the money for one. But we did get rid of our gas guzzler and replaced it with a more feul efficient smaller sized sedan. We even live closer to my husbands job so as to save some money on gas. I take walks if the destination is close. Or I will plan trips so as to waste less gas. There are many small things people can do. But most people don't know the effect their actions have on the planet. They think, everyone else does it, so if I do it now and then, it won't make a difference. But it does. And the real issue is educating everyone on how much damage is really done.

Stinkydirtball - such simple examples would be recycling, conserving power and water (e.g. turning off appliances not in use, not wasting water or putting it out onto the garden) that kind of thing!

And I agree with the asker...it seems stupid.

But I'd say it's credited to ignorance, laziness and arrogance - and the natural tendency of the human towards a "it's not my responsibility/everyone else does it/it won't really destroy the planet will it?" etc mentality...

People don't literally choose to destroy the planet, they just simply choose to do what they think is best for them. And what's seems best for people is always the best for the planet.

Unfortunately there are many in the human race who are just plain lazy and don't fully understand what our lives would be like if Earth was destroyed.

We tend to neglec the simplistic things in life with ease. And avoid the difficult things in life with the moderation of doing other things that may be of equal or greater importance.

I think that people think that we're probably beyond hope at this point, and it's probably easier just to turn away and pretend that we're not living...oh you know...ten thousand times the sustainability that we should be living.

I drive a gas guzzling minivan, but I recycle religiously. Do I cancel myself out?
