Prevention of Infection

There are several precautions you can take to prevent infection of the pierced area and encourage healing.

* Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching the pierced area or jewelry to keep bacteria from your hands away from the piercing site. Keeping the pierced area clean is the most important way to prevent infection.

* Cleanse the piercing site with appropriate solution as frequently as recommended for that particular site, and for the full length of time recommended for healing. (See third paragraph.)

* Keep pierced area free of chemicals such as perfume, hair spray or hair gel. After showering, rinse the pierced area with clear water to remove soap or shampoo residue.

* Do not hold a public telephone against a newly pierced ear. Clean your telephone frequently with a disinfectant.

* Following ear or facial piercing, be sure your pillowcase is clean and changed frequently.

* A gauze pad or cotton swab can be used to clean crusts from around the jewelry. Use a new swab for each piercing site. Jewelry should be rotated once or twice while applying solution during each cleaning.

* Earrings should not be removed or changed for at least a month, and should be worn continually for the first 4 to 6 months. Other piercing sites may require more specific care.

You keep it VERY, VERY CLEAN.
I am not a docter and so I can not take medical responsibility for this information
I am writing here from my own experience.
when I had my ears pierced,
I put lots of pharmacutical type alcohol
( the type kept in the medicine chest in the bathroom)
onto a CLEAN cotton ball and then I rubbed it on the front and back of the pierced area twice a day (morning and night)..
I was an idiot and did not use the alcohol right away like I was told to do and one of my ears got a bit inflamed (sore).
SO I put A clean very hot wash cloth onto it to bring down the swelling and all the while I continued to use the alcohol twice a day - (morning and night).
If the swelling does not goe down in a day then you better get to the doctor and he or she will probably give you antibiotics.
I write all Of this to you as just my opinion and do not intend it to be taken in any way as the advice of a medical professional

DONT PLAY WITH IT! I made that mistake and it got badly infected. The piercing parlor should have given you a solution to spray on it twice a day back and front. Twist your earring while you spray it so it doesnt heal to the inside of the piercing. If they didnt give you anything a diluted rubbing alcohol applied with a q-tip should work. If its in the cartilege some neosporin will help it heal faster. Try not to sleep on that side too. And pull your hair back when you sleep. Youll wake up in a lot of pain if you dont.

Best of Luck.

clean with Alcohol, don't take your earrings out, keep turning them so that they do not get stuck and skin does not grow to the earring itself. Than just wait till they heal up and then put on some you really like. Have fun with different earrings, they look nice!

First, you don't get it done with a gun.

Secondly, you stay away from alcohol and all alcohol based "ear cleaning" products. All it does is dry the tissue and cause prolonged healing and often excess scar tissue.

Thirdly, you stay away from peroxide. Not only does it wash away the dead cells, it washes away the newly formed cells. Prolongs healing.

Fourth, no neosporin. It helps trap dirt near the piercing.

Fifth, don't rotate the jewelry. Unless you like longer healing times and scar tissue.

Sixth, don't get it done with a gun.

Do NOT take the earring out for 6 weeks. While the earring is still in your ear, be sure to rotate it so that it does not grow into your ear lobe. Also, pour rubbing alcohol onto your ear lobe to keep it from getting infected. When you take the earring out, clean the hole well with rubbing alcohol. Clean earrings and earlobes regularly with rubbing alcohol to keep them from getting germy.
