I have heard that it is quick. MY thoughts: You have to think like a criminal to really understand what goes through their minds when deciding there death of choice. if they chose their own death they still might think they are in control . If they are sick enough to kill they should not have the choice.

My assumption would be that it is purely historical-- Washington simply never chose to dismantle their gallows. In fact, prior to 1996, hanging was to be the default form of execution, unless the defendent requested lethal injection. Mitchell Rupe was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death, but refused to choose lethal injection over hanging as the form of execution. Rupe claimed that his execution by hanging constituted cruel and unusual punishment, and he was supported in court, prompting the law to be ammended in 1996 to place lethal injection as the default form of execution, with hanging as an alternative. It seems as though Washington could have then chosen to eliminate hanging as an available form of execution, leading me to believe that it has remained as a "traditional" form of execution simply because it was, before more humane methods such as lethal injection, the main form of carrying out capital punishment.

I guess some people actually feel guilty for the stuff they have done and want to be punished. Many of the kids (in juvie loced facility) I work with hurt themselves, cut their arms up til they bleed even, slash at themselves or try to kill themselves. They will wrap string around their neck too. We have to take anything even pencils away from them.

Why should we care how a murderer dies. A person abducts rapes and kills a women or child, they deserve a little cruel and unusual punishment. A person robs a convince store and kills the clerk they deserve a little cruel and unusual punishment. You rob and rape and know that you will be treated with care and concern? Yep a real deterrent.

Proper hanging(long drop) snaps the persons neck and renders him/her dead in the matter of seconds.[1]
It looks bad, but it is probably as humane as lethal injection(which has a tendency not to work in some cases).

Perhaps someone has seen one too many westerns and wants to be hung? Why not give them the option? Dead is Dead in my opinion, the person is killed with minimal wait time, the drop breaks their neck almost instantly paralyzing them. As long as they don't intentionally torture the person, there is no reason why it is cruel or unusual..

Maybe if we had only horrible means of executions, people may rethink committing the crimes. An easy death is still not a deterrent.
