Short 1968 and older
Long 1968 and newer
this reference came from Jegs High Performance catalog for a small block chevy. You can use a short pump on a long pump motor it you use a spacer behind the pulley. They sellthem too. I'm not sure of the dimensional difference but it is obvious. The only difference in them is the snout length.

the long and short pumps have only one function that is to aligne the pullys. if you have a short then you need to stay with a short
going with a long will not allow you belt to stay in a straight line
