Isn't this fact astonishing? How can something so big that happened in your lifetime be so irrelevant to one's life? I heard this fact this afternoon on a radio station and THEN the DJ went on to say that 95% know what the date was (as in Sept. 11)... How could you NOT KNOW?! Sometimes I wonder what this world i coming to.
So I just wanted to know your opinions on these two facts.
(I know what year it happened, so please don't leave responses saying: 2001!)

Hurricane Katrina: Early morning August 29, 2005.
Hurricane Rita: September 24, 2005 it made landfall.
I know, because it's something that impacted our country. I'm probably one in very few (aside from the victims & their families) who knows this.

In addition to the person who asked about the date of Katrina... That was a different situation in our history as well, so many people won't know about that. We knew it was hurricane season, it wasn't something unexpected like the terrorist attacks... Although I believe those were out government's doings. They impacted us in different ways due to the situations.

Call Me Babs... Yes I know when Pearl Harbor was bombed, my grandfather was stationed there and almost lost his life. "Yesterday, December 7, 1941 a day that will live in infamy." I don't know exactly about the German/Austrian because it didn't happen to this country, it didn't impact our lives as greatly as 9/11. PLUS, it didn't happen in my lifetime. Something that happened almost five years ago in your own country SHOULD be remembered vividly. I can remember that day like it was yesterday... I remember sitting in my history class watching in awe with my mouth agape and tears running down my face. I was 13 years old... and it impacted me like that and there are adults out there who didn't even care about it.

It's hard to imagine that 9/11 happened just under 5 years ago. It seems like it happened yesterday. People are still reeling from that. So many people were lost in just that one day. Don't be too hard on people when they tell you they don't exactly remember. It could be their defense mechanism dealing with the harse realities of the world we live in. By the same token, the following events were and are still important to remember. Do you know the exact day that the German army marched into Austria? or do you know when Pearl Harbor was bombed? Do you know the year Olympic athletes were killed in Munich, Germany?

Can you name the date when Katrina devastated the Gulf?
So you're saying the Hurricane Katrina is of lesser importance than the WTC? I'm not sure what you mean. It wasn't something unexpected like the terrorist attacks? I do believe it was unexpected, not in the sense of the hurricane itself but the damage it would cause and the people it would hurt.

I feel the reason people don't know what year September 11th happened is because we are still living in fear like it was yesterday. There are soo many terroist acts going on everyday. Until we can feel safe again as a nation we will continue to feel like it was yesterday. Even recently in the news we have had a scare with terriorism. People can't even fly in a plane and feel like they are safe. September 11th was quite a impact on the world and we are much more concerned about how it is affecting us then what year it happened. There is so much to be done.

This percentage might surprise intelligent Americans but I'm afraid it doesn't surprise people in the rest of the world. Americans seem to think the world is America and the rest of us don't really matter. If we don't learn from the past it will be repeated. How frightening that the people from the most powerful country in the world are so ignorant! Don't they ever stop eating long enough to think!

I am not really surprised, however I don't believe people have forgotten about the horrific incident itself - just the date. Looking at the whole picture I guess the date is unimportant, the most important fact is that it happened at all.

I'll never forget...I graduated high school that May and started college that August and had my grandpa's funeral September 11, 2001.
I'm ashamed that people don't know when it happened.

It doesn't surprise those of us watching from Europe.
The ignorance of the americans is legendary - they have a hillbilly culture and are proud of it.
They thought Iraq was going to be a cakewalk.
