When they were first told, they were not necessarily for kids. They were just stories that the bards (storytellers) told and it was a way to pass history down from generation to generation. There was no TV or Movies etc. Music and stories were all they had

Humpty Dumpty
Jack And Jill
London Bridges Falling Down
There was an Old woman who swallowed a fly i don't know why she swallowed a fly ... perhaps she'll die.
Little Bunny Foo Foo - bopping them on the head
Three Blind Mice... cut their tails off with a carving knife
Sing a Song of Sixpence - long came a blackbird and snipped off her nose
There are many more but i can't think of them now. Crazy huh?

People express feelings in many ways like singing, story telling. The people were going through tough times plagues, the great fire of London etc hence London burning! The rhymes sound beautiful so later this was told to kids.
