ok i'm just a newbie to this so heres my problem:

ok,2 weeks ago a had a bit of a problem with my wireless connection, while i was playing starcraft online.I started to lag..which shouldnt happen since we have an SBC yahoo 2wire router(DSL)

My sister, along with her laptop went back to Phillipines for 2 weeks or so and then the miracle happened my computer didnt lag or had any problems anymore,i know it was her laptop's fault since we use the same connection but, now that she's back i'm having the same trouble from last time...is there anyway to solve it? i have a USB linksys wireless-g adapter - she uses her built-in adapter

Alright, this is how it works;

DSL comes in designated speeds..256K etc. It costs to go higher>faster>and it has to be up AND down to be coherent.

Cable is far faster than DSL because it starts at a meg and goes up>but you share THAT Line so it CAN occasionally drag.

Now, when you say you use wireless connection and SHE uses a built in adapter I can only assume you mean USB or Ethernet.

Direct connections are faster>less lag time>because they don't have to fly across the air.

Many other things can come into this equation. Mostly likely your DSL speed is on the low end..256K...for gaming it sucks.

If you have not set up a WEP security key on your DSL modem and router for the wireless then most likely someone is borrowing that connection from you>thus using up some of your speed.

You really need to call geeks on call or someone to come over to the house and set this up...it not as easy as I make it sound but I am a tech.

You will pay 50.00 + and hour for this.. I charge 135.00 and hour so do this...USE YOUR FREE TECH SUPPORT FIRST that comes with Yahoo and Linksys....or at LEAST use their FREE step by step illustrated HOW TOs on their sites.

It sounds to me like when you and your sister are both using the internet connection (are you high speed?) that you need more bandwidth that you are getting with your current isp...

If im right you can tell by simply asking your sister to use her computer but make sure no applications that use the internet are running and try your game and check your lag...

The other thing that comes to mind is for you to check and make sure your using the infrastructure setting on your wireless router, and enable the repeater setting if you have such a setting possible as this will increase overall signal strength in your network.

ok 2 pc's on a wireless router has noting to do the the lag problem you have set it up all wrong 1 big mad rush to get online i know now this is what you need to do make sure you have a security key set on your wireless network and you only have 1 network icon connected and on your sisters laptop make sure there is online one network icon connected
now on your pc click on start / control panel then click on network & internet connectons icon then click on network connections ..icon and look in that windows how many network's are live if you have 2 that is runing right click the 2 of them and tick the box show icon thats the 2 that is enable then on the desktop in the taksback click on 1 at a time if you see
activiity
internet
packets
sent
received

gateway
1,202
1,082

mycomputer
1,492
992
that lot in one of the network icons that is live
then someone of the out side is on your wireless network
what your have to do is hard reset the router and reset a new id and password for the router now for ur sisters
same thing chat what net work icones are live
if you see what i said in one of them network icones you need to reset a new id and password on the router home control panel for your sisters network and this time dont use a wep key there crap use a wpa- key that is more better then a wep key
then clean up the 2 computers then run a virus/ spyware /adware scan and have a firewall on the 2 computers so noting can get in use a good starong friewall as windows xp firewall is crap buy its self so get a good firewall and use windows xp firewall as well i know microsoft say if you have a firewall turn off windows xp firewall <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

you use that lot and always keep a eye on the wireless connection and your be fine you can run many pc's of a wireless router its your connections your not checking up on in the control panel that is the lag problem & go in your router control panel and disabel .. games& application sharing .that will make your speed on both pc's go more fast if you have ..games & application sharing set to disabled
