I attented some parenting classes years ago and they had a bug person come to speak with us about what was safe to use around small children. It was recommended to us to use the Combat bait trays. Combat was the first to come out with that kind of thing but now there are others on the market. Usually you put these where the kids cannot reach them anyway but if they did get one it takes a great deal of effort to get into one of those things. Cleaning helps but you can have roaches in a clean house because they can live off of just about anything. I've had great success with the Combat products so that would be what I would try first.

Put containers of sugar mixed with boric acid in places that pets and children can't reach--such as high cabinets.

The roaches will eat the sugar, the boric acid will expand their stomachs, and they will completely disappear in two weeks.
