Thats not correct. I am the only child. Since I am speaking for myself, you wont believe but I get along with everyone. Infact I have a huge friends circle. It is just a presumption that only childs are hard to get along.

It has to do alot with how they were raised. If they were raised without socializing with other kids before kindergarten, then there may be problems. I know many "only child" kids who are not hard to get along with. Socialization must be started at an early age.

Not too sure if the statement is true, but I can think of:
- we are a society of humans living together and a good environment will be about different people living and sharing together. Guess if you are an 'only child', you did not get the necessary exposure (to relate to others). ? Just a shot :-)

Alot of the answers have covered the lack of having to share, but there is also the control factor. They were in as much control as a kid can be and had things their way, even if they weren't spoiled. Also this doesn't hold true for all only children.

Didn't have to share etc. Always went their way, that's what they expect as adults also. Some of the most driven people also, if it didn't go their way then they worked doubly hard to make it go their way again or they couldn't bare it. Loss, hardship, suffering, are all easier to handle also with a group of loved ones supporting you. Talk about get tin CRANKY!! Have that pile all up on your shoulders and deal with it.

Because they are selfish and self-centered. They are also spoiled and used to getting all the attention. I think they have poor social skills and interaction skills.

They're not. My son is an "only child" and he gets along with everyone. He's just one of those kinds of people whom other people find easy to get along with.
It's simply an unfair and untrue stereotype.

Ichi-ban syndrome. It's all about them. But they do usually appreciate your company and "onlies" tend to be intelligent. I married one, she's hard to get along with, but she's glad that I make the effort.
If you gain the confidence of an ichi-ban type, they might sometimes include you, as in "it's all about me and my _______"
